Summary, etc. |
This study investigated the compliance of Pahimis Festival in Amadeo, Cavite with the United Nations Environment Programme's (UNEP) Standards for sustainable events. The descriptive research design utilizing quantitative method was employed in this study. This utilized three groups of respondents, namely: 39 committee members of the Pahimis Festival representing local government units or agencies involved in the implementation of the event; 100 visitors of the Pahimis Festival; and 253 local residents from three selected barangays in Amadeo Cavite. The research instrument used in assessing the level of compliance of the Pahimis Festival with sustainability standards was a modified questionnaire adapted from UNEP'S Sustainable Event Checklist (2012). The results showed that the three groups of stakeholders of the Pahimis Festival, such as LGUs, visitors and local residents were typically female of varied ages. Most of them hold college degree and/or completed secondary education. They are generally self-employed. Findings revealed that the Pahimis Festival only partially complied with UNEP's standards for sustainable events. The areas were improvements or changes are much warranted in order to comply with UNEP's standards are local transport, communication, exhibitions and stakeholder engagement and communication. Minor improvements were needed on areas of venue and catering I provision of food and drink. There was an overall evaluation of 'partial compliance' which indicates that some criteria of the UNEP's standards for sustainable events are met while others are not. Although these unmet criteria are not currently presenting serious risks on the environment, they could lead to serious problems over time. Thus, concerted efforts must be taken to meet the standards for sustainable events. As a whole, the evaluation of the compliance of Pahimis Festival with sustainability standards can be perceived as an ongoing improvement process which can motivate stakeholders to become more sustainable. In line with this, a plan of action was developed and proposed by the researcher in order to improve the sustainability of the Pahimis Festival. The goal is not perfect sustainability", as this is an unrealistic goal. Rather, the stakeholders should aim to achieve a desired level of sustainability, as they work together as a constituent group with the shared goal of enhancing sustainability over time. |
