Summary, etc. Alternative Learning System (ALS) has been established to provide all Filipinos the
chance to have access and complete their primary education. This study determined the
coping strategies ofthe Alternative Leaming System (ALS) graduates in relation to their
academic achievement and challenges encountered in college. A total of 116 ALS

graduates served as the respondents of the study. The study employed descriptive-
correlational design. A modified Coping Strategies Questionnaire was used in

determining the coping strategies of ALS graduate. The second grading ratings of the
respondents were utilized in determining the academic performance. The data were
analyzed statistically using the Mean, StandardDeviation, andPearson Product Moment
Correlation Coefficient. The findings ofthe study revealed that the students have a very
good coping strategy in terms of approach factor, however, they only have a good coping
strategy in terms ofsocial support factor and avoidance factor. A significant relationship
between approach factor and academic achievement was also noted. Hence, the approach
factor as the coping strategy of the ALS graduates affects their academic achievement
while the other two variables which are avoidance factor and social support factor do not
affect the erformance ofthe students in academic. The second design used in the study
was-the qualitative approach utilizing the thematic analysis. Results revealed a number of
challenges that the ALS graduates encountered, namely: difficulty in dealing with lessons
and projects; financial needs to support schooling; distance from the house to the school;
and bullying for being ALS graduates. Despite these challenges, the ALS graduates
pursue their studies using coping strategies to improve their academic performance.
