Summary, etc. |
lpil, lntsia bijuga (Colebr.) 0. Kuntze, is an extraordinary valued tree
highly targeted for intensive illegal logging and consequently categorized as
an endangered species needing immediate protection and conservation
interventions. The aim of this study is to determine cost- effective techniques
in the mass propagation of hard-to-reproduce species, for conservation and
production purposes. A 2x6 factorial experiment in Split-plot design was laid
out with twelve (12) treatment combinations replicated three (3) times. There
were two (2) methods of propagation (misting and non-misting) as the main
plot and six (6) levels of concentration of IBA as subplots (0 ppm, 300 ppm,
500 ppm, 1000 ppm, 1500 ppm and 2000 ppm). The observational study
period is three (3) months.
The result shows that there was no significant difference observed
between the two methods of propagation with regards to length of roots. No
significant difference was also shown for the interaction effects among
methods of reproduction and levels of concentration. However, significant
difference was observed among the levels of concentration where the highest
length of roots was noted in the control (10.36 cm) cuttings. This was closely
followed by the concentration 300 ppm (9. 70 cm). The least among the
treatment was noted from 2000 ppm (7.74 cm). On the number of roots, the
most number was recorded from 2000 ppm (12.83) while the control cuttings
had the least with 2.50. On the rooting percentage, the treatment combination
between methods of propagation and levels concentration showed significant
difference. The non-misting propagation combined with B3 (300 ppm IBA) and
B, (1000 ppm IBA) produced the highest percentage of roots with 100% and
was followed by the group of 500 ppm IBA (93%). The lowest percentage of
roots was noted in the misting method at 300 ppm IBA concentration (30%).
On the root biomass, methods of propagation exhibited a significant
difference. The ion-misting method had the higher root biomass at 1.98 g as
compared to misting with 0.51g . lt was concluded that the application of
IBA can work either alone or combination. It significantly accelerated the
number of root formation of the length of roots, and the root biomass per
cutting. The study infers that the length of roots and the number of roots
formed were significantly influenced by the levels of IBA concentration, while
root biomass was higher at non-mist propagation system. Furthermore,
rooting percentage had a significant difference on the interaction between
methods of propagation and levels of IBA concentration. Moreover, the lpil
stem cuttings can be propagated through either of the methods. As a
recommendation, /. bijuga can be best propagated generally with the more
economical technique of mass propagation using non-misting with or without
exogenous rooting hormone treatment. |
