Vocabulary is essential in developing skills related to English language learning. This study explored the effect of communicative language games and direct vocabulary instruction on the oral fluency of Grade 11 Senior High School students of Gov. Alfonso D. Tan College in Tangub City. This research used the pre-experimental research design.
The participants of the study were sixty students identified through purposive sampling. The intervention materials used were the researcher-made instruments for Communicative Language Games (CLG) and Direct Vocabulary Instruction (DVI). A modified rubric was used in assessing the pretest and posttest oral fluency of the participants. Mean, Standard Deviation, and t-test were the statistical tools used in analyzing the data gathered. Results revealed that the pretest oral fluency of the participants was moderately proficient while the posttest oral fluency of the students was proficient after the use of the communicative language games.
The pretest and posttest oral fluency of the group of students given the direct vocabulary instruction was proficient. Results revealed a highly significant difference in the level of oral fluency of the two groups of students before and after the conduct of Communicative Language Games and the Direct Vocabulary Instruction. There was no significant difference in the posttest performance of the two groups. Both strategies resulted in the highly significant increase in the students' posttest oral fluency performance. Thus, the strategies for vocabulary instruction influence the development of students' oral fluency.
