520 | 3 | _aAlternative Learning System (ALS) has been established to provide all Filipinos the chance to have access and complete their primary education. This study determined the coping strategies ofthe Alternative Leaming System (ALS) graduates in relation to their academic achievement and challenges encountered in college. A total of 116 ALS graduates served as the respondents of the study. The study employed descriptive- correlational design. A modified Coping Strategies Questionnaire was used in determining the coping strategies of ALS graduate. The second grading ratings of the respondents were utilized in determining the academic performance. The data were analyzed statistically using the Mean, StandardDeviation, andPearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. The findings ofthe study revealed that the students have a very good coping strategy in terms of approach factor, however, they only have a good coping strategy in terms ofsocial support factor and avoidance factor. A significant relationship between approach factor and academic achievement was also noted. Hence, the approach factor as the coping strategy of the ALS graduates affects their academic achievement while the other two variables which are avoidance factor and social support factor do not affect the erformance ofthe students in academic. The second design used in the study was-the qualitative approach utilizing the thematic analysis. Results revealed a number of challenges that the ALS graduates encountered, namely: difficulty in dealing with lessons and projects; financial needs to support schooling; distance from the house to the school; and bullying for being ALS graduates. Despite these challenges, the ALS graduates pursue their studies using coping strategies to improve their academic performance. | |
